The OptiX BWS 1600S Submarine Line Terminal Equipment is the terminal equipment for a submarine network, provides a standard interface that supports various terrestrial network equipment elements, such as network protection equipment (NPE), routers, SDH, and terrestrial transceivers. According to the use of the submarine repeater, the submarine system can be classified into repeatered system and unrepeatered system. The system meets the demands for bandwidth of operators to the best extent by accessing 192 channels with 10 Gbit/s rate or 96 channels with 40 Gbit/s rate of each channel.

Application of the OptiX BWS 1600S

The OptiX BWS 1600S Submarine Line Terminal Equipment, the OptiX BWS 1600S for short, is the terminal equipment for a submarine network.

According to the use of the submarine repeater, the submarine system can be classified into:

  • Repeatered system
  • Unrepeatered system

The OptiX BWS 1600S can be applied to both the two systems.

As a terminal equipment, the OptiX BWS 1600S provides a standard interface that supports various terrestrial network equipment elements, such as network protection equipment (NPE), routers, ATM, SDH, and terrestrial transceivers.

The OptiX BWS 1600S has the following features:

  • Long-distance transmission
  • Reliable performance
  • Smooth in-service capacity expansion capability

The following are the main technologies used in the OptiX BWS 1600S:

  • Reliable multiplexer/demultiplexer
  • Erbium-doped optical fiber amplifier
  • Raman amplification
  • ROPA technology
  • SuperWDM technology
  • 40 Gbit/s coherent transmission
  • Advanced forward error correction (AFEC) technology
  • Hyper forward error correction (HFEC) technology
  • Channel equalization technology
  • Flexible dispersion compensation technology
  • Protection mechanism with high reliability
  • Universal and centralized network management system

Transmission Capacity

The system meets the demands for bandwidth of operators to the best extent by accessing 192 channels with 10 Gbit/s rate or 96 channels with 40 Gbit/s rate of each channel.

The system adopts of modular design. The access capacity can be expanded easily. The system expansion from 40->80->120->160 wavelengths can be realized. The extended C band can also be used to obtain extra 20% transmission capacity. In this case, the system expansion from 48->96->144->192 wavelengths can be realized. The system upgrade is achieved by increasing the number of wavelengths easily.

Transmission Distance

The transmission distance varies with the system type.

Repeatered System

The maximum transmission distance of the repeatered system reaches 12000 km, which is suitable for transoceanic application.

Unrepeatered System

The maximum transmission span of the unrepeatered system reaches 85 dB in long hop (LHP) transmission.

Software Package Loading

The software package loading function can be enabled to load the NE-level software so that the software can be upgraded, activated and managed in an integrated manner. In this case, the NE software can be upgraded in a simpler and easier way. Moreover, the version mapping can be checked and automatically updated for in-service boards.

Software package loading has the following features:

  • The loading process is based on only the desired NE and is performed by using one user interface.
  • The software package is stored on the SCC. The NE software is directly placed in the target directory, whereas the board software is buffered in the CF card. Hence, after a board is newly seated, the board software is automatically updated. If the board software file is lost, the SCC restores the file.
  • The NE can be automatically managed. The software of the newly seated board is automatically updated when it does not match the software of the NE.
  • Software package loading is an incremental loading process in which only the files to be updated are downloaded.
  • Software package loading supports the rollback function. When a loading process fails because of a fault that occurs in the software or hardware of the system during loading, the NE software is restored to the state before loading.

Software package loading applies to the following scenarios:

  • Upgrade of NE software
  • Replacement of a service board
  • Replacement of the SCC
  • Replacement of the CF card on the SCC

Board Software

The board software runs on each board and it manages, monitors and controls the operation of the board.

It receives the command issued from the NE software and reports the board status to the NE software through performance events and alarm.

The specific functions include:

  • Alarm management
  • Performance management
  • Configuration management
  • Communication management

The drive control over functional circuits is board software-specific. The board software realizes under the control of the NE software the ITU-T compliant functions.
