General description of roller compactor:
LG Roller compactor, also known as a dry granulator, is a pivotal piece of equipment in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries. It is used to transform dry powder blends into free-flowing, dust-free granules through a mechanical process without the need for moisture or heat.
Working Principle and Process Flow
The dry granulation process is a continuous and efficient method of powder conditioning, often considered a "lean" manufacturing approach. The mechanism is typically broken down into three core units:
1. Feeding System: Powder is loaded into a hopper and conveyed to the compaction zone, often using a horizontal or vertical feeding screw. Advanced machines may employ twin-screw designs to ensure a steady and consistent feed, preventing material leakage and bridging.
2. Compaction Unit: This is the heart of the machine. The powder is forced between two counter-rotating, high-pressure rollers. These rollers compress the powder into a dense, solid sheet or "ribbon". The compaction force, roll speed, and gap are meticulously controlled to produce a ribbon with the desired thickness and hardness.
3. Size Reduction Unit: The compacted ribbon is then fed into a milling or granulation system. This system uses a rotor and screen to break the ribbon down into granules of a uniform, predetermined size.
Often, a hydraulic system is integrated to provide the necessary compaction force, and a water cooling system is employed to manage the temperature of the rollers during operation.
