During the installation process, some key frequency converter parameters can be optimized to improve motor operation, but these parameters are usually not well configured. For the settings discussed in this article, it is first necessary to verify whether the parameters match those listed in the manufacturer's documents, and pay special attention to the engineering units.

Frequency converter thermal current

Thermal current refers to the maximum allowable current, which is different from full load current (FLA). Full load current is the maximum amperage allowed for long-term operation of the motor at rated power, while thermal current represents the current that can be applied briefly and safely by the frequency converter exceeding the standard rated power of the motor.

The thermal current parameters inform the frequency converter how much "extra" power can be processed without thermal faults. When the limit is exceeded, the frequency converter can trigger a fault before the motor overload occurs, thereby protecting the motor from the impact of thermal faults. When configuring the driving parameters of the motor current, users can find the full load current and motor service factor (SF) on the motor nameplate. Multiplying these two values can calculate the thermoelectric flow in amperes.

Pulse width modulation

Each frequency converter that supplies power to AC motors converts the line AC power into DC power, and then the frequency converter modulates it into an AC waveform. This modulation is achieved by turning on and off a fast pulse DC power supply to generate AC waves. The frequency converter adjusts the amplitude and frequency of the wave to rotate the motor at the desired speed. The pulse width modulation (PWM) switch frequency parameter regulates these pulses and adjusts them by changing the number of alternating current pulses that supply power to the motor.
