Type of electrolyte for lithium-ion battery
1. Liquid electrolyte
The selection of electrolyte has a great impact on the performance of lithium-ion battery. It must have good chemical stability, especially it is not easy to decompose at high potential and high temperature, and has high ionic conductivity (10-3s/cm). Moreover, it must be inert to the cathode and anode materials and cannot corrode them. Because of the high charge-discharge potential of lithium-ion batteries and the anode material embedded with lithium ions with high chemical activity, the electrolyte must use organic compounds instead of water. However, the ionic conductivity of organic matter is not good, so soluble conductive salt should be added to the organic solvent to improve the ionic conductivity. At present, the lithium ion battery mainly uses liquid electrolyte, and its solvent is anhydrous organic matter such as EC (ethylcarbon), PC (propylcarbon), DMC (dimethylcarbon), DEC (diethylcarbon). Most of them use mixed solvents, such as EC2DMC and PC2DMC. Conductive salts include LiClO4, LiPF6, LibF6, LiAsF6 and LiOSO2CF3, and their conductivity is LiAsF6LiPF6LiClO4LibF6LiOSO2CF3 in turn. LiClO4 is generally limited to experimental research because of its high oxidation and easy to cause explosion and other safety problems; LiAsF6 has high ionic conductivity, is easy to purify and has good stability, but it contains toxic As, and its use is limited; LibF6 has poor chemical and thermal stability and low conductivity, LiOSO2CF3 has poor conductivity and is corrosive to electrode, so it is rarely used; Although LiPF6 will undergo decomposition reaction, it has high ionic conductivity, so LiPF6 is basically used for lithium-ion batteries at present. At present, most of the electrolytes used in commercial lithium-ion batteries use EC2DMC of LiPF6, which has high ionic conductivity and good electrochemical stability.
2. Solid electrolyte
The direct use of metal lithium ions as anode materials has a high reversible capacity. Its theoretical capacity is up to 3862mAhg-1, which is more than ten times that of graphite materials, and its price is also low. It is regarded as the most attractive anode material for the new generation of lithium ion batteries, but dendritic lithium ions will appear. Using solid electrolyte as ion conduction can inhibit the growth of dendritic lithium ions, making it possible to use metal lithium ions as anode materials. In addition, the use of solid electrolyte can prevent the leakage of liquid electrolyte, and the battery can also be made into a thinner (only 0.1mm thick), higher energy density, and smaller high-energy battery. The destructive experiment shows that the solid lithium ion battery has a high safety performance. Through the destructive experiments such as nailing, heating (200 ℃), short circuit and overcharge (600%), the liquid electrolyte lithium ion battery will have leakage, explosion and other safety problems, while the solid battery has no other safety problems except for a slight increase in internal temperature (<20 ℃). Solid polymer electrolyte has good flexibility, film-forming property, stability and low cost. It can be used as a separator between positive and negative electrodes and as an electrolyte for transferring ions.
Solid polymer electrolyte can be generally divided into dry solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) and gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). SPE solid polymer electrolyte is also based on polyethylene oxide (PEO). Its disadvantage is that the ionic conductivity is low, which can only reach 10-40 cm at 100 ℃. In SPE, ion conduction is important to take place in the amorphous region, which is transferred by the movement of polymer chain. PEO is easy to crystallize because of the high regularity of its molecular chain, and crystallization will reduce the ionic conductivity. Therefore, to improve the ionic conductivity, on the one hand, we can reduce the crystallinity of the polymer and improve the mobility of the chain, on the other hand, we can improve the solubility of the conductive salt in the polymer. Using grafting, block, crosslinking, copolymerization and other means to destroy the crystalline properties of the polymer can significantly improve its ionic conductivity. In addition, the addition of inorganic composite salts can also improve the ionic conductivity. Adding liquid organic solvent with high dielectric constant and low relative molecular weight, such as PC, into solid polymer electrolyte can greatly improve the solubility of conductive salt. The electrolyte formed is GPE gel polymer electrolyte, which has high ionic conductivity at room temperature, but will fail due to liquid separation during use. Gel polymer lithium-ion batteries have been commercialized.
