What is motorcycle throttle cable?

The throttle cable connects the body to the heart of the motorcycle, which makes it a very important link. The throttle cable looks like a simple part of, but if it is improperly maintained or poorly replaced, it may prevent you from riding. Setting the motorcycle throttle free play is one of those very simple adjustments, it can make your bike feel more sensitive and make the ride more smoothly.

How to adjust your motorcycle throttle cable?

Step 1: Cable condition

Visually check whether the throttle cable is damaged. Friction-induced cracks, kinks, corrosion, and severely worn areas should all cause concern. Check the cable from the throttle handle to the throttle body/carburetor visually as much as possible.

Step 2: Check throttle cable free play The free play of the throttle cable is usually checked by measuring the amount of movement of the throttle handle relative to the fixed point on the throttle cable housing. Most brands/models will specify a 2-3mm throttle grip free play. This can be easily checked by referring to the main features on the throttle handle or marking it with a marker, and then measuring the amount of movement relative to the housing with a ruler, scale or caliper.

Step 3: Check throttle return Fully open and release the throttle, check the throttle operation. Confirm that the throttle is quickly and easily fully returned to the closed position. Use the handle to check the return of the throttle all the way to the left, center, to the right and in the middle between the stop point and the stop point on both sides. If the throttle cannot be fully returned, the cables may be strapped, incorrectly wired, frayed or corroded, so further investigation is necessary.

Step 4: Throttle line adjustment Single throttle cable adjustment is very simple. First, remove all dust covers that protect the cable regulator. Next, loosen the lock nut. Then you can adjust the inside or outside of the cable adjuster so that the throttle handle has the correct amount of free swimming, usually 2-3mm. After completion, you can tighten the lock nut and reinstall the dust cover.
