Silicon carbide (Chemical formula -- SiC), also known as emery and carborundum (It is called Siliziumkarbid and Siliciumcarbid in German). It occurs in nature as an extremely rare of the mineral: Moissanite. Black silicon carbide is hard, sharp, and brittle.

Silicon Carbide was first prepared in the early 1800s and was in commercial production by 1892, as a powder for grinding and cutting, having a Mohs hardness of 9-10 (almost as hard as Diamond). The grain edges of Silicon carbide are sharp and have a heat transmission capacity. Silicon carbide grains can be bonded together by sintering to form very hard ceramic which used in refractories' production.

Silicon Carbide is produced in resistance furnace, where exact mixtures of petroleum coke and siliceous sand are burnt Silicon Carbide arise by increasing of crystals in the core of furnace during smelting. After cooled, the furnace is disassembled, the material is sorted and according to the quality is classified to material suitable for the production of abrasive grains and material suitable for metallurgy.

Silicon carbide can be used as a deoxidizer and high-temperature resistant material in smelting. Also, it can be used to produce refractories and abrasive tools as raw materials, such as ceramic kiln furniture, plate, beam, frame, burner nozzle, grinding wheel, sandpaper, oilstone, grinding head, etc.

The application of Silicon carbide:

1, Functional ceramics

Silicon carbide has the advantages of high-temperature resistance, lightweight, high strength, good absorbing performance, etc. It also has a wide temperature range (can be used from room temperature to 1000 ° C), small dosage, adjustable dielectric properties, and can effectively reduce infrared radiation.

2, Refractories

Silicon carbide has the characteristics of wear resistance and high-temperature resistance and is widely used as the basic material of refractories

3, Abrasives materials

As its super hard properties, it can be prepared into various grinding wheels, abrasive paper and various abrasives.

4, Metallurgical deoxidizer

It could also be used as a reducing agent and heating element in steelmaking

Usage:

For abrasive grains is used material with silicon carbide SiC content min. 98%.

For metallurgical purposes is used material with silicon carbide SiC content minimal 90%.

black Silicon Carbide is mainly used for the production of abrasive tools and instruments. Among further possibilities of usage belongs blasting by the dry and wet method, production of refractory blocks, bricks, refractory cement and compacting mixtures.

In the electrotechnical industry, it is used for the production of insulating materials and lightning arresters. Wonderfully is asserted as an addition to laminated and frame saws at the cutting of stone, then as filling agent to epoxy resin for increasing of resistance against wear.
