Angular contact bearings Characteristics :
1. Angular contact bearings are single row ball bearings but designed in such a way that the central line of the contact between balls and raceways is at an angle. This angle is called a contact angle and as per the manufactured design these vary between 15o, 25o,45o
2. In this type of bearings contact angles between balls and tracks have been swung to an angle between 20o to 40o to the radial plane.
3. These bearings are capable of carrying higher axial loads than the corresponding deep groove ball bearings, but in one direction only. These bearings are eminently suitable where heavy thrust (axial) loads are encountered at high speeds.
4. Usually these bearings are mounted in pairs and adjusted axially against each other so that they may support combination of heavy radial and thrust (axial) loads. If paired mounting, make the end faces of outer rings of two bearings face to face, i.e. wide end face to wide end face (DB type) and narrow end face to narrow end face (DF type).
5. This bearing is most used in the applications with high rotational speed, high precision and small axial load such as main shaft of motor of airplane,main shaft of machine tool and other main shafts of high speed and precision machinery. It is also used on high frequency motor, gas turbine, oil prump, air compressor, printing machines etc. It is a most widely used bearing in machinery industry.
