Carbon steel is one of the most frequently used forms of steel. It is affordable, easily tempered for added hardness, and suitable for different applications depending on the specific grade of carbon steel. Mild carbon steel (steel containing .16-.29% carbon) is not brittle or ductile, and various forms of tempering can improve the surface hardness. In addition, it’s easily fabricated and able to withstand stress and bending without breaking, making it a good option for some heavy-duty applications.

However, carbon steel does need a level of regular maintenance not seen in materials such as stainless steel and aluminum. And unlike those materials, mild carbon steel is subject to corrosion, meaning it needs addition protection such as galvanization to extend its life.
