Introduction to Metal Pallets
Pallets are used by companies all over the world to move materials from one location to another and to store material in warehouses. Traditionally these pallets have been made of wood, but more recently some companies are looking to pallets made of other material to overcome some shortcomings that traditional wood pallets have. Limitations of wood pallets, such as insect infestation, sanitation, fire hazard, and performance constraints, have led to pallets being constructed of either metal or plastic. Despite the obvious cost differential, some companies prefer non-wood pallets for their shipping requirements.
Benefits of Metal Pallets
Some companies require that loads of material should be shipped that are unable to be moved using traditional wood pallets. To overcome this limitation, metal pallets have been designed to give companies a product that allows very heavy loads to be moved on a single pallet. A wooden pallet can be expected to take a load of 1000 kgs, while a plastic pallet can be used for loads up to ten times that amount, depending on the construction of the pallet. For heavier loads the metal pallet is an obvious choice as it can be used for loads in excess of 10,000 kgs, some twenty times that of a wood pallet. Using wood pallets for loads above their performance specification can lead to damage of the material being carried and insurance claims.
The lifespan of a metal pallet is significantly longer than a wood pallet. The traditional wood pallet can be used a few times without any issue and can be repaired, or can be an item that is only used once and then discarded. The metal pallet is built to last. Depending on the manufacturer a pallet manufactured from recycled aluminum can last anywhere from ten to fifteen years with no issue. A plastic pallet can last much longer than a wooden pallet, perhaps more than a year, but not as long as the metal pallet.
Metal pallets were designed as an alternative to wood and plastic pallets to advance and solve problems with modern manufacturing methods.
