Carburant

Carburant is classified into casting-steel carburant (the People's Republic of black metallurgical industry standard, YB/T 192-2001 casting-steel carburant) and casting-iron carburant. And some other additive material also uses carburant, such as additive for brake pads (used as frication material). Carburant belongs to additional material to increase carbon when casting steel and iron. High quality carburant is the necessary auxiliaries to produce finest steel.

The raw material and production process are of various kinds, including wood carbon, coal carbon, coke, graphite etc. And under each classification there are many varieties. High quality carburant generally refers to graphitized carburant. The reason it is called graphitization is that the carbon atomic arrangement presents micromorphology of graphite. Graphitization can decrease the content of impurities and sulfur and increase the content of carbon in carburant.

When used in casting, carburant can increase significantly the utilization of steel scrap, decrease the use of pig iron or even do not use pig iron. At present most carburant is applied for electric furnace smelting and a few carburant with fast absorption rate is used for cupola. The filling type of electric furnace smelting is filling carburant along with steel scrap and other burden while small quantity of carburant can be added to the surface of molten iron. However, filling large quantity of carburant should be avoided to prevent such situation that excessive oxidation leads to insignificant recarburizing effect and inadequate carbon content in castings. The quantity of carburant added depends on the proportion of carbon and other raw materials. Different kinds of carburant are chosen according to different needs of casting iron.
