Botanical name : Mentha spicata L. Family : Labiatae / Lamiaceae Introduction Spearmint ( Mentha spicata L.) is a culinary herb and cultivated in many parts of India. It is a perennial herb, indigenous to parts of Europe. The crop is now commercially cultivated widely for its carvone rich essential oil in USA, Russia, Germany, Australia and India. The leaves of M. spicata find use in traditional medicine’s remedy for fever, colic pain, bronchitis, stimulant and carminative. The essential oil hydrodistilled from above ground part of Mentha spicata plants is used for flavouring chewing gums, tooth paste, food products and pharmaceutical preparations . The natural population of Mentha spicata demonstrate considerable variability in morphology and chemical constituents such as carvone, limonene, linalool, piperitenone oxide, piperitone oxide, menthone, 1,8-cineole and carvacrol16. Another mint oil of great importance is spearmint, Mentha spicata this oil is rich source of L- carvone. Therefore, synthetic L-carvone is always in competition with this oil. Recently, china has become a key player in the production of synthetic L-carvone .Although synthetic L-carvone is no match for natural spearmint oil in olfactive charaterisitics .Perfumersand falourrists are always temped to modify L-carvone with some minor/trace chemicals and use this in their new creations.
