Deer and rabbits usually cause the most damage in the winter when food is scarce. They chew through the bark of saplings, eventually girdling the tree and preventing it from taking up water and nutrients. In other seasons, they feed on bark and foliage.

The most effective way to protect trees is to construct a fence around each tree. This method is both economical and more practical than attempting to exclude deer and rabbits entirely with the use of high fences around the property.
