  Pharmacological & Clinical Research

• Powdered Notoginseng root has no in vitro hemostatic effect, but as long ago as the 1940s it was shown to significantly shorten bleeding time in animals. This effect, replicated in recent experiments, is lost if the vein is ligated first. It is therefore thought that the liver plays a large part in the herb’s effectiveness.
• Intravenous injection of a preparation of Notoginseng root markedly raised coronary blood flow, reduced blood pressure, and had no effect on the heart rate in anesthetized dogs.
• Powdered Notoginseng root was used in one clinical trial of 16 patients with coronary artery disease whose main complaint was angina pectoris. All but one had satisfactory relief of pain.
• In small study, daily use of powdered Notoginseng root was associated with a reduction in blood pressure, and in four cases there was mild improvement in the ECG.
• Preparations of Notoginseng root have been shown to have an in vitro inhibitory effect on the Norwalk virus and some dermatomycoses.
• In one series of eight patients with acute attacks of Crohn’s disease, powdered Notoginseng was helpful in seven cases. On the average, within two days the pain lessened, within four days peristalsis had been restored, and within 10 days the acute condition had passed.
