Morticing machines, sometimes called hollow chisel morticers, use a two-piece tool comprising a drill bit in the centre of a hollow, four sided chisel. The operation is the same principle as a drill press with the drill bit removing most of the wood and the square chisel then trimming the edges and corners to provide square, straight edges.
This ingenious device was invented during the latter part of the 19th century and remains in common use in most professional woodwork shops.
