Geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) for Landfill and Environmental Protection
Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) combine geosynthetics with sodium bentonite clay to form a highly impermeable barrier that often replaces thick layers of expensive compacted clay.
Geosynthetic Clay Liners provide an alternative to conventional Compacted Clay Liners by replacing a thick section of compacted clay with a thin layer of pure sodium bentonite. The benefits of this approach include easy installation and more useable air-space in landfill and environmental protection
applications.

Use the Hongxiang-GCL Cost Comparison spreadsheet.- What is the steepest slope on which BENTOMAT may be used?Reinforced BENTOMAT GCLs have been successfully used on slopes 3H:1V and steeper. These designs were based on internal and interface direct shear testing.
- When is a GCL "too wet" and should be replaced?
- A GCL only serves its function of low permeability after it is hydrated. The key is that cover material should be placed over the GCL prior to significant hydration. Based upon experience and field testing, a reinforced GCL can usually be hydrated without requiring replacement.
