Common Materials for custom abs enclosure
Depending on your application there’s a range of polymer sheets available on the market. However, if you’re looking for short runs, one of your biggest issues will be colour matching.
Unlike Plastic Injection Moulding, which is an additive production system, Vacuum Forming is subtractive. Often basic colours are available freely, but anything beyond that will be difficult to source unless you’re looking for one ton loads or above.
When choosing a plastic, you’ll need to consider application. Will your product be used inside our out? Will it be exposed to extreme heat or cold? Does the product need to withstand high impact? Are you looking for something that’s fire retardant?
As a general rule of thumb, we work to the following guidelines.
PVC – Fire retardant, Good for outdoors use, Often used for non food based packaging and toy manufacture.
PE – High wear resistance and impact strength, High temperature resistance, High energy absorption, Self lubricating.
PP – Hygienic, impact resistant, ideal for food applications.
ABS - High rigidity and impact strength, Excellent chemical and abrasion resistance, Easily machined to close tolerances. Used for interior and exterior trims, machine parts, trays and home appliances.
HIPS – Often used for food, dairy and medical packaging applications where taste/odour sensitivity is key.
PC -polycarbonate,it is a most strong material, with high strength and elastic modulus, high impact strength, wide range of usage temperature.

shaped, and stretched onto a pre made mould by applying a vacuum. It is used to give texture and depth to signage,

Thermoforming is a generic term for the process of producing plastic parts from a flat sheet of plastic under temperature and pressure. In the highest expression of the technology, thermoforming offers close tolerances, tight specifications, and sharp detail. When combined with advanced finishing techniques, high-technology thermoforming results in products comparable to those formed by injection molding. All of us are exposed to many thermoformed plastics in our daily lives. They have replaced many parts previously manufactured from wood, paper, glass, and metal.
2.What are the benefits of vacuum forming and thermoforming?
Thermoforming is efficient and very cost-effective for the production of many plastic parts depending on their size, shape, and quantity. Initial project costs are usually much lower, and lead times to tooling and production are generally much shorter than other processes. Modifications to design often times may be achieved. Temporary tooling offers an inexpensive short-term test for design issues and product market acceptance.

We typically deal with materials ranging in thickness from .040" to .500".
3.What type of plastics can you vacuum forming and thermoforming?
Plastics that lend themselves best to thermoforming are: acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS), high-impact polystyrene (HIPS), high density polyethylene (HDPE), high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polymethyl methacrylate (or "acrylic") (PMMA), and polyethylene terephthalate modified with CHDM (PETG).
