WALL ART KINETIC SCULPTURE
DESCRIPTION: This kinetic sculpture is designed to produce an optical moiré effect that entertains with a simple spin of the hand. Although the sculpture is visually attractive when still, it becomes truly fascinating when in motion. Unfolding in a variety of constant changing patterns the sculpture appears to move in an impossible way. The art is not just the design, but the spaces in between that create an illusion. No battery, motor or other power source is used.
MY PROCESS: All of my work is conceptualized and handmade by me. I draw the sculptures onto wood, then cut them out with a band saw. Final shaping is done with a belt sander, then the piece is sanded. Each part must be measured with total accuracy. A drill press is used to make extremely precise, straight holes. For the dark brown mahogany sculptures I use wood dye instead of stain because it penetrates the wood to bring out more grain detail then stain ever could. Then I finish the sculptures with pure Tung oil which brings out the detail even more. The end result is a truly unique, interesting sculpture.
