Gabion basket retaining wall falls into the category of a monolithic gravity mass structure. The gabion basket retaining wall is basically constructed with natural stones. Considering the drainage problem, soil particles are deposited into the small voids of the natural stones filled within the gabion wall in order to allow for pockets of vegetation to take root. 

Generally, gabion baskets are supplied in a variety of lengths, widths, and heights. The wire mesh used in the production of gabion baskets strictly corresponds to EN10223-3 and meanwhile the gabions meet the requirements of ASTM A975-97. Graded fill materials mainly range from 4″ to 8″ for standard gabions and 3″ to 6″ for reno mattresses, which will ensure uniform flexibility of the apron and will create a new state of equilibrium of the structure. Gabion aprons are commonly used to protect the toe of the gabion baskets retaining wall from scouring. It is suggested that the  depth of the gabion apron should be a minimum of 9″-12″. The length of the gabion apron shall extend beyond the toe of the structure a minimum of 2 times the anticipated depth of scour.

The gabion apron is basically placed on the ground utilizing a geotextile filter fabric between the gabion apron soil interface to prevent and leaching of soils from underneath the apron. Gabions or reno mattresses may also be connected together filled and then placed into the water with a sling arrangement. This method is frequently used for building scour-resisting mats around bridge piers. Gabion aprons may be fabricated using Terra Aqua standard PVC gabion units.

On the basis of a stability analysis and investigation, in order to achieve acceptable factors of safety for sliding, additional stability of the gabion basket retaining wall may be required. An ideal method to achieve additional stability is to place the gabion basket retaining wall on a 6 – 10 degree inclination towards the retained slope.
