Free length is how long the spring is when not installed. Rate is a measure of how stiff it is. If a spring compresses exactly 1” when you add 100 lbs., it’s said to have a 100 lbs. per inch spring rate. Springs are sometimes specified by their diameter as well, but that doesn’t influence how the spring operates.
