Thrust bearings are designed to handle axial loads while operating at high speed. Bearings are composed of bearing rings with raceway grooves for the balls. Double direction thrust ball bearings can support axial load in both directions. Neither style can be subjected to radial loads. Available in bore dimension range from 10mm to 560mm.

Thrust ball bearings consist of shaft washer, a housing washer and a ball and cage thrust assembly. They are separable which means that mounting is simple. They can accommodate axial loads in one direction only and must not be subjected to any radial load.

Thrust ball bearings are classified into those with flat seats or aligning seats depending on the shape of the outer ring seat (housing washer). They can sustain axial loads but no radial loads. For Single-Direction Thrust Ball Bearings, pressed steel cages and machined brass cages are usually used The cages in Double- Direction Thrust Ball Bearings are the same as those in Single-Direction Thrust Ball Bearings of the same diameter series.

Single direction thrust ball bearings consist of a shaft washer, a housing washer and a ball and cage assembly. These bearings can only handle thrust loads in one direction.

Double direction thrust ball bearings consist of two housing washers, two ball and cage assemblies and one shaft washer. These bearings can handle thrust loads from two directions.

1. Thrust ball bearing can handle loads in the axial direction only.
2. Bearing rings mounted on the shaft are called shaft washers, while those mounted in the housing are called housing washers.
3. Both washers contain raceways for the balls.
4. Thrust ball bearings are available as both single an bi-directional types. The bi-directional thrust bearing incorporates a third washer and an additional set of balls.
5. The center washer is located in axial direction by a shaft shoulder and sleeve.
6. Care must be taken in handling to prevent damage to separate rings and ball assemblies.
7. The thrust ball bearings are Available in two designs: single direction and double direction.

Bearing of this type consist of the washers with raceway and the assembly of ball and cage. The washer that contacts the shaft is called shaft washer, and the one attached to the housing is called housing washer.

Thrust bearings in double directions have a central washer connected to the shaft. Single direction bearings can carry axial load in one direction, and double direction bearings can carry axial load in two directions. The bearings with housing washer which has speherical mounting surface is self-alignable, which can reduce the effects of mounting error.
