Nose Rings are placed in cattles noses for one reason only, this reason is for control. For some cattle this is a very sensitive area, when showing cattle this is a very important tool. When showing cattle the ring should not be pulled or held tight, because as a point of control in doing this is like ripping up the hand brake in a car!
Cows and bulls, as large animals, can exhibit aggressive and unpredictable behaviour. For this reason, cattle often have a metal ring inserted into their nasal septum for training and control purposes. Such a ring provides the handler a bit of extra safety due to the pressure it places on the sensitive areas of the bull's nose.
