Citronella Essential Oil
Citronella oil is one of the essential oils obtained from the leaves and stems of different species of Cymbopogon (lemongrass). The oil is used extensively as a source of perfumery chemicals such as citronellal, citronellol and geraniol. These chemicals find extensive use in soap, candles and incense, perfumery, cosmetic and flavouring industries throughout the world.
Citronella oil is also a plant-based insect repellent, and has been registered for this use in the United States since 1948. The United States Environmental Protection Agency considers oil of citronella as a biopesticide with a non-toxic mode of action. However, since citronella insect repellant effects were not proven within the EU, the use of citronella as an insecticide is prohibited under the Biocidal Product Directive 2006.
Citronella oil is classified in trade into two chemotypes:
Ceylon type

- Obtained from: Cymbopogon nardus Rendle
- Consists of geraniol (18-20%), limonene (9-11%), methyl isoeugenol (7-11%), citronellol (6-8%), and citronellal (5-15%).
Java type

- CAS: 8000-29-1
- EINECS: 294-954-7
- FEMA: 2308
- CoE: 2046
- Obtained from: Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt
- Consists of citronellal (32-45%), geraniol (11-13%), geranyl acetate (3-8%), limonene (1-4%).
- The higher proportions of geraniol and citronellal in the Java type make it a better source for perfumery derivatives. The name Cymbopogon winterianus is given to this selected variety to commemorate Mr. Winter—an important oil distiller of Ceylon, who first cultivated and distilled the Maha Pangeri type of citronella in Ceylon.
Both types probably originated from Mana Grass of Sri Lanka, which according to Finnemore (1962) occurs today in two wild forms--Cymbopogon nardus var. linnae (typicus) and C. nardus var.confertiflorus. Neither wild form is known to be used for distillation to any appreciable extent.
Citronella oil from Cymbopogon species should not be confused with other similar lemony oils from Corymbia citriodora and Pelargonium citrosum.
Appearance : Transparent liquid
Aroma : Lemony, Grassy, Floral
Mixes well with : Basil, bergamot, cedar wood, eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, lemon, lime, oregano, penny royal, pine, rosemary, orange, and tea tree.
Aromatherapy :
Citronella is usually overlooked as an aromatherapy oil. Citronella possesses warming and activating qualities on biological levels. The essential oil of Citronella has an uplifting effect on mood. It has a softening effect on the skin and also helps to combat excessive perspiration - making it extremely useful for use on feet. It has antiseptic, bactericidal, deodorant and insecticide properties.
Antiseptic & disinfectant :
Citronella grass are used for the production of citronella oil which is used in soaps, as a mosquito repellent in insect sprays , candles and also in aromatherapy, which is famous in Britain, Indonesia. Besides oil production, citronella grass is also used for culinary use, such as in tea.The oil is used externally as an insect repellant. This oil is used for relieving headaches, migraines and rheumatism. It can be used as an antiseptic and to sanitize kitchen counters and chopping blocks. When it is diffused in a room, the scent repels insects and bugs. Its antiseptic qualities are good for fighting colds and flu.

Candle making :
It is mostly used in the fragrance industry as turning candle making like Parfum Magnifique, Spa Luxury, Fragrance Oils and Yummy Fragrance and feng shui candle, natural wax candles, unity candle arrangements, roman candles and environmentally friendly candles. The scent is also safe for use in soaps and lotions.
Citronella is used in soap and candle making and is useful in aromatherapy benefits. An example would be to add citronella essential oil to rose or lemon fragrance oil that give added anais type of fragrance oil. It is also used in candle making, scented soaps, potpourri, room spray, refresher oil fragrance oil, scented envelope candles and cubes votive candle.
