Patchouli Oil
Patchouli {Pogostemon patchouli) is a native of Malaysia and is now cultivated in a number of S.E. Asian countries, the West Indies and Paraguay. It is a bushy plant, growing to as much as a metre in height, with large, soft, furry leaves. Although it is a member of the same plant family as many of our herbs of Mediterranean origin (Basil, Hyssop, Lavender, Marjoram, Melissa, Peppermint, Rosemary, Thyme, etc.) it is unlike most of them in its appearance, habitat and medicinal properties.
The essential oil is thick and a dark yellowish-brown, often with a green tinge. The odor is not easy to describe: hot, musty and pungent, very strong and penetrating and so persistent that it is known it to linger on clothes for as much as two weeks, even after laundering.
The active principles include patchoulene, palchoulol (or patchouli camphor), norpatchoulol and traces of eugenol, cadinene, carvone, caryophylene, seychellene, humulene, ben-zoic and cinnamic aldehydes. Of these, it is interesting to note that patchoulene is very similar in structure to azulene (found in Camomile) and has the same anti-inflammatory properties.
The plant, which it known as Pucha-put in its native habitats, has a long history of use in the traditional medicine of China, Japan and Malaysia as a stimulant, tonic, antiseptic and febrifuge, as well as in treating snake-bites and the stings of poisonous insects, and it has always been used as a perfume, insecticide and antiseptic in the countries of origin.
In aromatherapy Patchouli has some valuable uses in SKIN CARE and treatment, provided always that the client does not find the smell repugnant. In many places in this databse it is stressed that the client's choice should guide the aromatherapist' or user's selection of oils, and nowhere is this more important than in dealing with Patchouli, as the perfume is so strong, distinctive - and to some people quite repulsive - that little or no therapeutic effect could be expected if it was used contrary to the client/users preference.
Uses for Patchouli Oil :
1. Patchouli oil has grounding and balancing effect on the emotions and banishes lethargy, while sharpening the wits, fighting depression and anxiety. It is also said to create an amorous atmosphere.
2. It is effective for fungal and bacterial infection and is of great help for insect bites. It could also be used as an insect repellant and is also used as a support for dealing with any substance addiction. With its excellent diuretic properties, it is effective in fighting water retention and to break up cellulite, easing constipation and helping to reduce overweight.
3. Furthermore, it has a great deodorizing action, and helps when feeling hot and bothered, while cooling down inflammations and assisting with wound healing.
4. On the skin, this oil is one of the most active and is a superb tissue regenerator, which helps to stimulate the growth of new skin cells. In wound healing, it not only promotes faster healing, but also helps to prevent ugly scarring when the wound heals.
5. Patchouli oil is very effective in sorting out rough, cracked and overly dehydrated skin and is used to treat acne, acne, eczema, sores, ulcers, any fungal infections, as well as scalp disorders.
