Cedar wood essential oil is extracted from Juniperus virginiana of the Cupressaceae family. It is also known as Virginian, red, eastern red or southern red cedar, as well as Bedford cedar wood. This clean smelling, balsamic oil does not only help calm and balance energy, but also promotes spirituality, while helping to clear the respiratory system of excess phlegm and catarrh. It sorts out urinary tract infections, as well as bladder and kidney disorders, while improving oily skin and clearing up dandruff. Wood chips and sawdust are subjected to steam distillation to extract the oil and the yield is about 35 %. It blends well with benzoin, bergamot, cinnamon, cypress, frankincense, jasmine, juniper, lavender, lemon, neroli, rose and rosemary.
Cedarwood oil also contains the highest amount of sesquiterpenes.
Uses & Precaution :
* Cedar wood oil benefits the skin by its sedating ability which relieves itching. Its astringent action is great for acne, oily skin, as well as for hair and dandruff. It helps with chest and urinary infections, acts as a general tonic and has a pronounced effect on mucus membranes.
* It has a calming and soothing effect on the mind and is of great help in conditions associated with anxiety and nervous tension. It is also of value in cases of arthritis and rheumatism.
* In high concentration, cedar wood oil may irritate the skin and it should be avoided in pregnancy.
* A unique property of cedarwood oil is that it is an antisborrhoeic. Antisborrhoeics work on the endocrine system by normalizing sweat gland secretion. To help with sweat gland problems, use cedarwood in your bath or your deodorant.
* Cedarwood oil is highly effective expectorant for all bronchial problems. As an expectorant it helps the respiratory system remove excess mucus. Cedarwood steam inhalatation therapy is a great way to treat asthma, bronchitis – any minor cough or lung irritation. To make a steam bath, add boiling water to a bowl, cover with a towel. Have your cedarwood oil in hand, place your head into the towel over the bowl, add the oil to the water and inhale the vapours for at least 3-4 minutes. (Note: make sure the towel is “sealed” around the bowl and your head to ensure no steam escapes)
* Caution : Keep out of reach of children. If pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use. Storage: Keep in a cool, dark place.
* For Dietary Supplement : Dilute 1 drop with 1 drop of V-6 or olive oil. Put in a capsule an dtake up to three times daily or as needed.
* Topical : Apply 2-4 drops directly to desired area. Dilution not required, except for the most sensitive skin.
* Aromatic : Diffuse up to 1 hour three times daily.
Oil Properties:
It has a soft, woody and "pencil-like" smell and has a faint undertone of sandalwood. It is pale yellow to light orange in color and is viscous.
