Ling Zhi (in Chinese) / Reishi (in Japanese) (botanically as Ganoderma lucidum), a member of the family of fungi, is one of the most precious and rare wild medicinal plants in China. Tradition of the Chinese people says, "Ling Zhi, the miraculous plant, has the virtue of raising the dead and giving him life again." This is enough to prove how high Ling Zhi is appraised for the invaluable qualities it possesses as pharmaceutical plant. "The Chinese Materia Medica," a pharmacopia by our world-famous pharmacologist Li Shizhen, justifies this valuation of ancient times and depicts: "Ling Zhi strengthens the heart, increase vitality, and mental activity, and preserves one's youthful complexion."
In analysis and research of modern biochemistry, Ganoderma lucidum (Lingzhi mushroom or Reishi mushroom) produces a group of triterpenes, called ganoderic acids, which have a molecular structure similar to steroid hormones. It also contains other compounds many of which are typically found in fungal materials including polysaccharides such as beta-glucan, coumarin, mannitol, and alkaloids. Lingzhi has rich microelements like zinc, germanium, copper, magnesium, manganese, sodium, potassium. Especially the content of germanium is as high as 800-2000PPM, that is 4-5 times higher than ginseng.
In modern Lingzhi research and therapeutic usage, Lingzhi may possess anti-tumor, immunomodulatory and immunotherapeutic activities, supported by studies on polysaccharides, terpenes, and other bioactive compounds isolated from fruiting bodies and mycelia of this fungus. It has also been found to inhibit platelet aggregation, and to lower blood pressure (via inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme, cholesterol and blood sugar.
