Specifications
Thailand handmade scarf and shawl are dyed with natural color. Fiber of scarf & shawl are made by traditional handmade machine.Backgrounds
The scarf and shawl handmade products is originally from Chiang Mai Province in Thailand. The tribe migrated to the present location after the original village was inunated by dam project in 1964. Mr. L., the village chief at the timeof establishing the new village, and his son J., saw the inportant of the handicraft and artisan skills of the village women. They decided to promote and receive these arts in order that they could provide a source of additional family income.
Interest grew steadily in the group's work, as it is naturally dyed and hand woven on back strap looms. Accordingly, the women continued to develop their designs and the quality of their work. Today the group encompasses two neighboring villages and boasts eighty women as members.
The Products
The village has about 100 housholds. Most of them grow rice for home consumption, beans for sale, and cotton for weavers. Some also raises and sells animals or seek day labors on neighboring farms.
Cotton is grown traditionally without chemical fertilizers or pesticides on the mountainside outside the village. The crop is not officially "organic" as the group is quite small and has not sought what can often be a complicated process if certification. Material for dyeing the cotton, such as bark, roots, and leaves, are harvested in the forest.
Members spin the cotton, boil and prepare dyeing materials, and "dip" thread to the desired shade of colour. After drying, thread is ready for weaving.
