Electronic VS mercury thermometers, which one is more accurate?
Purely technically, the achievable accuracy of an electronic thermometer is higher than that of a mercury one. The accuracy of a mercury thermometer depends on the value scale, and, unless you customize a one-meter-long thermometer, the scale can only acheive 0.1 degree, further reading being only by estimation. However, for a precise electronic thermometer similar to a one used for ovulation-period determination, the accuracy can be up to 0.01 degree. In fact, a daily used electronic thermometer’s accuracy is at 0.1 degree, similar to that of mercury one.
But one advantage of a mercury thermometer is its accuracy is very stable, no matter it is low as 35.5 for low body temperature or high as 41 degrees for fever. While generally an electronic one is most accurate in the scope between 37- 39, and less beyond it.
Electronic VS Mercury thermometer, which is faster?
If speed is the only to be considered, forehead thermometer and ear thermometer are the most efficient method. If the accuracy is added in for assessment, armpit and oral digital thermometer are also better than a mercury one.
Mercury in the mercury thermometer to be heated to body temperature needs more heat than the sensor in the electronic one, and the specific heat of glass of mercury thermometer is much higher than that of the probe of electronic one. Hence mercury thermometers must take 5 minutes measurement time, while digital ones take, if used correctly, about 1 minute to hear the beep. New electronic thermometers with computing capabilities take even only 15 seconds to predict the temperature.
If, in a measurement, no beep is heard for a long time, this often means wrong placement. In the case of an armpit measurement, parents should have the probe pressed in the middle of the armpit and fastened tightly, and hold kids with their arms fixed and unable to move, telling the kids a story or singing a song, and so it will be soon done.
What kind of electronic thermometer is the most accurate?

The next is oral temperature, but if the kids open mouth to breathe or talk during the measurement, the accuracy will be greatly affected.

Though ear thermometer is the current favorite of parents, ear is not an enclosed space, so ear thermometer measurements error will be greater. Also this approach is not suitable for babies, especially newborns within 3 months, because their ear canals are too small. The ear canal should be straightened by pulling up ear when measuring to get ear temperature accurately measured.
The worst measurement method is forehead temperature, which is far away from the body's internal environment itself, and also a completely open environment, and hence any turbulence, sweating or washing face will be a very big impact to forehead temperature.
