Wood activated carbon refers to wood which has been activated by chemicals or steam in order to form a porous microstructure capable of adsorbing water contaminants. Wood activated carbon possesses a large surface area, fine micropores, high adherence strength and fast filtering speed. Some of the common chemicals used to activate wood are phosphorous acid and zinc chloride. Wood activated carbon is used to control odor and taste in wastewater streams and to remove organic chemicals from industrial waste water.
Application of wood activated carbon:
Wood activated carbon has large pores which are called as mesopores or macropores. Due to the large pore size, they are used for adsorption of large molecular species. It therefore finds application in decolorization process. Wood activated by steam has larger pores and pits, this increases the surface area available for adsorption. Wood activated carbon is used in vapour phase injection systems for waste water treatment.
1. The maximum Methylene Blue of steam wood activated carbon can be 225mg/g(15ml), the maximum Iodine of steam wood activated carbon can be 1300mg/g.
2. The maximum Methylene Blue of phosphoric acid wood activated carbon can be 300mg/g(20ml), the minimum ash of phosphoric acid wood activated carbon can be 3%.
