ALNICO

Alnico is an alloy containing Aluminium (Al), Nickel (Ni), Cobalt (Co) hence named Alnico. 

Alnico alloys make strong permanent magnets, and can be magnetized to produce strong magnetic fields. Of  the commonly used magnets, only rare-earth magnets such as neodymium and samarium-cobalt are stronger than ALNICO.

Alnico magnets produce magnetic field strength at their poles as high as 1500 gauss (0.15 tesla), or about 3000 times the strength of Earth's magnetic field. .

Alnico is produced by either a sintering method or, more commonly, a casting method. The  cast or  sintered shape is acceptable for many applications .

The as cast look has darkened edges with a slightly rough texture (due to the sand mold edges); a machined face of an Alnico magnet has a bright silvery metallic surface and is usually extremely smooth as it is often precision ground.

 USES

Alnico magnets are widely used in industrial and consumer applications where strong permanent magnets are needed; examples are electric motors, electric guitar pickups, microphones, sensors, loudspeakers, traveling-wave tubes, and cow magnets. In many applications they are being superseded by rare earth magnets, whose stronger fields (B_r) and larger energy products (BH_max) allow smaller size magnets to be used for a given application.
