What is Arc Flash Clothing?
An arc flash is an explosive release of energy caused by an electrical arc. It can result from either a phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground fault caused by accidental contact with an electrical system, a buildup of dust, or an improper work procedure. Arc flashes can reach temperatures of 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Exposure to one of these flashes can result in serious injury or possibly death. What are HRC Ratings for Arc Flash Clothing?
Arc rating is the value given to a flame resistant fabric based on its arc flash protection characteristics. The higher the HRC rating, the greater the protection provided by the clothing. HRC ratings for Arc Flash clothing are determined by measuring the amount of energy necessary to pass through a particular type of fabric in order to create a 50% probability of causing a second or third degree burn. This value is measured in calories/cm2, and corresponds with the HRC (Hazard Risk Category) scale.
