Cylindrical lens is used to correct astigmatism in the eye, and, in rangefinders, to produce astigmatism, stretching a point of light into a line...They are available in either plano concave or plano convex configurations.
Plano convex cylinder lenses are ideal for UV beam shaping, or for applications operating in harsh or rugged environments. Focusing light in only one dimension, cylinder lenses are commonly used with linear sensor arrays, or to create a line from a laser source.
