How to measure
Prior to actual cleaning it is important that the brush is correctly sized so that bristies are in direct contact with the sides of the flue at all times(see illustrations).
Masonry chimney..Measure the inside of the tile in the centre of both sides to nearest 1/4”.
Pre-Fab chimney..measure along the centre axis in two directions of the extreme inside section where the brush would go.
Tools
Chimney brush(properly fitted to your chimney).
Drop cloth and tape.
Small broom,bucket,small shovel.
Fibreglass extension rod kit or brush
Loop and non-organic line.
The flexible fiberglass rods can be used for bottom-up cleaning through firplace opening,thimble or clean-out door in chimney.
They can also be used for top-down cleaning.
Line and loop method requires brush,loop and lines with 2people.
Line and weight method requires brush,line,weight.
