Description:
Tempered glass is a type of glass with evenly distributed compressive stresses on the surface which is made by heating float glass to nearly softening point and then cooling it down rapidly by air. During the instant cooling process, the glass exterior is solidified due to rapid cooling while the interior of glass is cooled down relatively slowly. This process will improve the glass exterior compressive stress and interior tensile stress resistance which can improve the overall mechanical strength of glass by gemination and result in good thermal stability.
Main methods to temper glass: Rapid cooling method (thermal tempering), chemical enhancement method (chemical tempering). Classification based on type of equipment used: horizontal tempering, vertical tempering, air cushion toughened. Further divided into degree of tempering: tempering, semi-tempering and regions tempering. Product properties: flat steel and bent steel. The most commonly used technique used currently is the rapid cooling method.
Rapid cooling method principle: glass is heated to the softening point in the heating furnace, then rapidly cooled by the air
Tempered glass features: When the glass is broken by external shocks, under the controlled inner energy, the glass is broken into small pieces. Compared to the knife and angular shaped glass shards seen after broken ordinary glass, the risk to human safety is minimized due to the smaller controlled pieces of tempered glass after breakage.
