Need the same force at all positions? You need a constant force spring
There are a number of different types of Constant Force Springs. More often than not they are made from steel strip. The most familiar function of a flat strip constant force spring is the tape rule, which allows you to pull out the tape all the way and requires no more effort from start to finish.
Constant force flat strip springs are manufactured from either texture rolled carbon steel or high strength stainless steel, depending on the application. Sometimes people confuse them with Power Springs (commonly called Clock Springs or Spiral Springs), which have a similar construction.
Constant force springs are seen in many applications:-
- Seat belts
- Brush springs for motors
- Counterbalance for sash windows
- Cable retractors
- Timers
- Plus many more
Although sometimes expensive to produce, their functionality often outweighs the unit cost. They are currently seeing resurgence in children’s toy applications as an environmental alternative to batteries.
Technical Capabilities
Materials: Spring Steels, Stainless Steels, Copper Alloys, Nickel Alloys, and a range of special materials such as Titanium, Elgilloy, Hastelloy, Kanthal etc.
Design: Full design capability using bespoke computer software. Designed to fit customers space envelopes and force requirements. Checking of customers own design for all orders received, prior to manufacture.
Spring Types:
- Constant force extension springs giving loads from 0.1kg to 12kg, with extensions up to 4000mm.
- Constant force spring clips.
- Spring motors giving constant torque for up to 80 turns. Constant force extension spring assemblies – mounted on bobbins and brackets, giving loads from 3.5kg to 11kg.
- Variable rate extension springs
- Clock type power springs – fitted to customers’ housings.

Processes: Hand manufacturing, Press work, Multi-slide manufacture, Photo-etching, Laser Cutting, Wire eroding, Vibro-deburring, Barrelling, Shot peening.
Heat Treatment: Stress relieving, Hardening and Tempering, Aus-Tempering and Local Annealing.
Finishes: Electroplating, Organic Zinc coatings, Autophoretic painting, Phosphating, Oiling, or as required by our customers.
