This type of functionalization can use graphene oxide an graphene intercalation material (GICs) as raw material, combining it with typical polymer as PS, PMMA, PVA, PP, Epoxy Compound, polyester and Makrolon etc. to make functionalized graphene and improve a specific property of graphene. Generally speaking, before functionalization, the precursor as graphene oxide needed to be peeled to sheet and mixed with polymer which dispersed in organic solvent. Then adopting the methods of rapid heating or further ultrasound to realize the compound of them.
After modify by polymer functionalization, the aspects as tensile elasticity, thermodynamic stability, glass transition temperature (Tg) of graphene get enhanced.
For Example, PVA-Graphene nanocomposite which only combined 0.7% graphene can improve76% in tensile strength, 62% in Young modulus. If adding 0.05% graphene in PMMA, its glass transition temperature can be improved about 30°C. In addition, there are authors adopt the way of emulsion polymerization to graft PS microballoon to graphene surface, It will typically improve the dispersibility of graphene in organic medium as N, N-DMF, meanwhile its mechanical property will be improved obviously.
