Tabriz is the capital of Azerbaijan, which lies in the mountainous region of northwest Iran. This is one of Persia´s largest rug-producing regions, which exports all qualities of rugs, from the simplest to the most luxurious. The highest-quality rugs are divided into 2 main categories. One is Tabriz Mahi, which is also called "Tabriz with fish patterns" (the rugs arched leaf pattern is called "Mahi", which means "fish"). The other is Tabriz Nagsheh. Nagsheh means "pattern" and refers in this instance to the figural patterns from Keshan and Isfahan, from which inspiration for the rugs was derived.
The motifs on Tabriz Mahi rugs take the detailed form of a leaf, which is particularly emphasised by the use of natural silk. Usually there is a smaller light medallions in the centre of the rug surrounded by 2 or 3 other medallions. Often rustic colours are used together with dark blue and pink.
The weave and weft are cotton and a very fine, closecut wool is used for the pile.
Knot density:
The rug-weaving of Tabriz rugs is caracterised by an amazingly high level of precision, which naturally increases with the knot density. The name Tabriz Mahi 40 means that the rug has 320.000 knots pr/m2. Tabriz Mahi 50 has 500.000 and the rare Tabriz Mahi 60 has 720.000 knots pr/m2. Tabriz Nagsheh, with Isfahan motifs, can have up to 1,5 million knots/m2.
