The mechnism of the ceramic rod spraying is as follows: the rod material is molted in the flame of the mixture of oxygen and acetylene and is atomized into small particles, then the particles are flying onto the surface of workpiece and form coating. It is low cost, reliable and easy to operate. The wear resistance of the sprayed workpiece coating is superior. For example the wear resistance of Cr₂O₃ coating is better than the plasma spraying.

Bond strength among particles is very high, and the thickness of coating is between 0.1mm and 1mm.
The cost of purchase, assemble, operation and maintenance is low. No water and inert gases are needed. Therefore, it can be widely used.

The material for spraying

Al₂O₃: white color, molten point is 2050℃. Due to its high hardness, it can be use for wear resistance coating, for example mechanical sealed coating, plungers, cylinder parts. It can also be used for anti-corrosion coating.
Mixed ceramic of alumina and titania: the coating color is from french grey to black with the content of TiO₂ increases, its molten point is about 1800℃. the coating porosity is low and the polished surface is smooth, especially the sprayed workpiece doesn’t produce static electricity. Therfore, it can be used in the filed of textile, printing, printing and dyeing industry.
Cr₂O₃: its color is black-blue, the polished surface is very smooth, and its chemical characteristic is stable. Therefore it can be used for corrosion resistance coating. Its hardness is also very high, similar to WC/Co cermet, so it can be used for wear resistance application.
ZrO₂: its color is white and molten point is 2500℃,so it can be used for thermal barrier coating of aeroengine.
