Molybdenum Fabricated Parts

Among the characteristics which make tungsten and molybdenum useful metals are their high melting points, along with high tensile properties and hardness. These same properties also make it difficult for simple and economic production of powder metallurgy parts. FOTMA has successfully developed the powder metallurgy process for the commercial production of molybdenum and tungsten diode heat sinks. They are now being supplied to customers around the world at a rate of billions of parts a year.

This technology also lends itself to the production of other high volume, discrete parts with simple geometries. Listed below are some parameters to be considered in evaluating such sintered metal products for practical commercial production.

Molybdenum has outstanding electrical and heat-conducting capabilities and relatively high tensile strength. Thermal conductivity is approximately 50% higher than that of steel, iron or nickel alloys. It consequently finds wide usage as heatsinks. Its electrical conductivity is the highest of all refractory metals, about one third that of copper, but higher than nickel, platinum, or mercury. The coefficient of thermal expansion of molybdenum plots almost linearly with temperature over a wide range. This characteristic, in combination will raise heat-conducting capabilities, accounts for its use in bimetal thermocouples. Methods of doping molybdenum powder with potassium aluminosilicate to obtain a non-sag microstructure comparable to that of tungsten also have been developed.

In the electrical and electronic industries, molybdenum is used in cathodes, cathode supports for radar devices, current leads for thorium cathodes, magnetron end hats, and mandrels for winding tungsten filaments.

Molybdenum Fabricated Parts is important in the missile industry, where it is used for high-temperature structural parts, such as nozzles, leading edges of control surfaces, support vanes, struts, reentry cones, heal-radiation shields, heat sinks, turbine wheels, and pumps.

Molybdenum Fabricated Parts has also been useful in the nuclear, chemical, glass, and metallizing industries. Service temperatures, for molybdenum alloys in structural applications arc, is limited to a maximum of about 1650'C (3000'F). Pure molybdenum has good resistance to hydrochloric acid and is used for acid service in chemical process industries.

Simple shapes are: cylinders, discs, cubes, washers and spheres. In general, symmetrical shapes are most easily produced. 

Molybdenum Fabricated Parts--Furnace Components

Many high temperature industrial furnaces use molybdenum (moly) components for such things as elements, element supports, power terminators, and process fixtures. Hot Isostatic Press (HIP) construction requires shells fabricated from molybdenum sheets. These are used to support the heating elements, and may also act as shielding. Likewise, flat heating elements made from molybdenum sheet are used in vacuum and hydrogen furnaces. Heat shielding and other furnace components and structures help round out the use of molybdenum in the furnace industry. 

Electronic & Semiconductor Components Silicon wafer processing relies on the use of ion implantation systems which inject ions at high energy directly into silicon wafer surfaces. The ion plasma source is energized via tungsten electrodes which operate within fabricated tungsten arc chamber.

Lamp Components
The use of molybdenum in the form of leads and supports has historically been central to the success of the lighting industry, along with the core tungsten components. Cut, welded and formed molybdenum and tungsten wire and rod parts are essential for the production of economical glass-to-metal sealed parts in lamp construction. For certain high intensity discharge lamps, anodes and cathodes are machined from molybdenum and tungsten rod.
