Stainless steel is a generic term for alloy steels containing 10.5% or more chromium. These steels are corrosion resistant. This resistance to attack is due to the oxide film formed on the surface of the steel which forms naturally when exposed to oxygen. Although extremely thin, this invisible, inert film is tightly adherent to the metal and extremely protective. All stainless steels have a resistance to corrosion however care must be taken to choose the correct alloy to suit the application.
At MICO Metals we stock Stainless steel in various forms and grades from many top local and international sources. We also work with top mills to produce new grades such as 445M2 and 404GP. Introduction to Stainless Steel Sheet
In metallurgy, stainless steel is defined as a ferrous alloy with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content. The name originates from the fact that stainless steel stains, or rusts, less easily than ordinary steel. Stainless steel has higher resistance to oxidation (rust) and corrosion in several environments.
High oxidation resistance in air at ambient temperature is normally achieved with additions of more than 12% (by weight) chromium. The chromium forms a layer of chromium (III) oxide (Cr2O3) when exposed to oxygen. The layer is too thin to be visible, meaning the metal stays shiny. It is, however, impervious to water and air, protecting the metal beneath. Also, when the surface is scratched this layer quickly reforms. This phenomenon is called passivation by materials scientists, and is seen in other metals, such as aluminium. When stainless steel parts such as nuts and bolts are forced together, the oxide layer can be scraped off causing the parts to weld together. When disassembled, the welded material may be torn and pitted, an effect that is known as galling.
Types of Stainless Steel Sheet
There are different types of stainless steels: when nickel, for instance is added the austenite structure of iron is stabilized. This crystal structure makes such steels non-magnetic and less brittle at low temperatures. For higher hardness and strength, carbon is added. When subjected to adequate heat treatment these steels are used as razor blades, cutlery, tools etc.
Significant quantities of manganese have been used in many stainless steel recipes. Manganese preserves an austenitic structure in the steel as does nickel, but at a lower cost.
Our stainless steel expanded metal is a versatile and economical product made from a high-quality sheet of stainless steel that is uniformly slit and stretched. This process forms diamond-shaped openings in the sheet, allowing for the passage of light, air, heat and sound. The strands and bonds of the bindings add strength and rigidity plus resist unraveling. The one-piece construction of stainless steel expanded metal will hold its shape for many years under normal circumstances.
We offer stainless steel expanded metal in a variety of patterns, including standard (raised), flattened, diamond, square, round, hexagonal, architectural and decorative, in a variety of gauges, opening sizes, materials, sheet sizes and finishes. Our product withstands corrosive atmospheres and harsh elements like grease, oil and cleaning solutions, and it requires very little maintenance.
Stainless Steel Expanded Metal Features

- Durable
- Versatile
- Easy to install
- Low resistance to wind loads
Used for screening, filtration, ventilation, security, architectural and decorative purposes, stainless steel expanded metal is lightweight and easy to fabricate and form. With its slip-resistant properties,
Stainless Steel Expanded Metal Applications
- rotor and stator
- stamping parts
- blade
- terminal
We offer a full line of expanded metal products made from a wide range of materials, including stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, bronze, nickel, brass, copper and titanium. The pattern varies by the gauge and type of material and the size of the diamond.
Expanded metal is the most practical and economical way to assure strength and safety. It features a one-piece construction that will not unravel when cut, and its anti-slip properties make it ideal for use on plant or pedestrian walkways, bridges or billboard platforms and stair treads.
Our expanded metal products are extensively used in a wide variety of applications, such as screens, fencing, filters and vents or for decorative building materials.
